In the year 3515 from creation (246 BCE), the Greek-Egyptian emperor Ptolemy brought together 72 Torah sages, sent each one of them to a separate chamber where they worked in total isolation, and ordered each one to translate the Torah from Hebrew to Greek. On this day, (the 8th of Tevet), their completed translations were turned over to Ptolemy. Each translation was identical, including thirteen different verses throughout the Torah that each sage thought it best to translate non-literally, so as best to conevy the true Torah meaning. The result was coined the "Septuagint", from the Greek word meaning, "of the seventy." Although the translation was considered a mark of merit for the seventy Torah sages, the very idea of translating the sacred Torah into a different language was considered to be a deviation from the true path of both the written and oral tradition, and the 8th of Tevet has since been observed by some as a fast day.
