The 9th of Tevet is the yortzeit, (anniversary) of the death of Ezra, in the year 3448 from creation (313 BCE). Ezra led the return of the Jews from Babylon to the Land of Israel (353 BCE). Under his leadership, the small community of returnees rebuilt the Holy Temple and renewed the Divine worship. Ezra was the head of the Great Sanhedrin of his generation, and enacted laws and customs that served to preserve and strengthen the community in its observance of Torah law.
