David Establishes an Altar on Mount Moriah

"So David went and brought up the ark of G-d from the house of Oved-Edom into the City of David with gladness... and David leaped about before the L-rd with all his might... so David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the L-rd with shouting, and with the sound of the shofar... into the city of David..." (I Samuel, Ch. 6)

David brought the ark up to the City of David, and had intended to begin construction of the Holy Temple. But it was soon clarified that David's portion in the House would be limited to digging the foundations and building the altar on Mount Moriah, at the site of the threshing floor which he purchased from Aravna the Jebusite. Together with the prophet Samuel, David also established the twenty-four priestly and levitical watches.
