Purifying the Temple

When the Hasmoneans regained control of the Temple from the Greek invaders, they began by creating simple vessels. For example, they initially fashioned a menorah out of seven lead rods, and only after regaining a portion of their wealth did they construct a menorah from silver. It was only after many years, that the Hasmoneans fashioned a golden menorah after the Mosaic original. (Menachot 28:B)
