Rambam Prays on the Temple Mount

The great scholar and codifier Moses Maimonides made the dangerous trip to Jerusalem in the midst of the crusades and made a pilgrimage to the Temple Mount, where he prayed in accordance to Jewish custom. He movingly writes about this visit in one of his letters:

"We left Acco for Jerusalem under perilous conditions. I entered into 'the great and holy house' (the site of the Holy Temple) and prayed there, on the sixth day of the month of Cheshvan. And I vowed an oath, that this day will always be a day of personal rejoicing for me, like a festival, which I will commemorate with prayer and joy before G-d, and feasting and drinking.
