The Balconies

The G'zuztra (or Chtzotzra as the word appears Midot, 2,5) was an upper balcony that ran along the top of the WomenÕs Court. During the Simchat Beit Hashoeva festivities, the men and women were separated for reasons of modesty. This balcony was an innovation of the sages and built during the time of the Second Temple. It was considered to be a very important improvement. (Source: Succa 52).
