The Top of the Mizbeach: Uses

On top of the mizbeach were three woodpiles. The first was the large woodpile upon which all the offerings were brought. The second woodpile was for the incense altar - coals were taken from here into the Heichal for the burning of the incense. The third woodpile was the perpetual fire - to keep the fire lit constantly. The ashes from these woodpiles were gathered into one large pile which was called the Tapuach, meaning voluminous.
