The Mikdash: Outer Structure

The Temple structure was surrounded by a system of 38 small compartments which were three stories high: 15 in the north, fifteen in the south and eight in the west. One could pass between the compartments by way of special openings. On the northern wall was the "winding passage," which was a staircase used to go up to the roofs of the compartments. On the southern wall was the "Water Channel" through which rain water flowed to the Temple's reservoirs.
