The Stoa (continued)
This shelf was also used on the eve of Passover. Two loaves from a thanksgiving offering that had been deemed unfit were placed there. The removal of these loaves signaled to the people that from that point on, it was forbidden to eat leavened bread. When these loaves were removed the people knew that it was time to burn all leavened bread that remained in their possession. (Sources: Brachot 33; Psachim 13; Succah 45).
