The Temple Institute: Temple Talk: Elul 9, 5765/September 13, 2005

Opening with a blast of the shofar, the call to repentance, and continuing with last week's discussion of the month of Elul as a month of introspection and preparation for the upcoming Rosh Hashana. What is the special significance of the shofar? Why are we commanded to hear the shofar on Rosh Hashana? Why do we proclaim G-d's sovereignty over all creation - including all mankind - on Rosh Hashana? A time of accepting personal responsibilty for our actions, as well as for our relationship with G-d. A time also for accepting upon ourselves our responsibilities toward G-d and our fellow man, on the national level. The universality of Rosh Hashana, and the portion therein for all righteous Gentiles and Bnei Noach.
