Police to Restrict Temple Mount Entry Amid Fears of Riots

reprinted from The Jerusalem Post

Men under 45 to be denied entry following reports of plans to disrupt peace; Shuafat refugee camp residents hurl stones at Border Police.

Police on Friday announced they will prohibit the entrance of individuals under the age of 45 to the Old City's Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

The move comes after intelligence was received by authorities over plans to disrupt the peace at the site.

Earlier this month, police burst onto the Temple Mount plaza following the end of prayers at Al-Aksa Mosque, after dozens of young worshipers started throwing rocks from the entrance of the Mugrahbi Gate. Three demonstrators were arrested in connection with rock throwing. No injuries were reported.

The demonstrations were broken up by force after Border Police entered the plaza.

Also on Thursday, residents of the Shuafat refugee camp north of Jerusalem threw stones at Border Police at a roadblock near the entrance to the camp.

The police fired a warning shot into the air in an attempt to disperse the rioters, but after they refused to retreat, one was shot in the leg and suffered light injuries. He was taken to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus.

Melanie Lidman contributed to this report.
