NU MK Uri Ariel visits Temple Mount

reprinted from The Jerusalem Post
Oct. 9, 2006

JPost.com Staff, The Jerusalem Post

National Union Faction chairman MK Uri Ariel ascended Jerusalem's Temple Mount on Monday morning during the limited time period in which Jews are allowed to visit the site during the month of Ramadan.

No unseemly incidents were reported.

Ariel stressed that on Succot - as on Passover and Shavuot - there is a Torah commandment to visit the holy site.

"Ascending today, even when the Temple is no longer standing, serves to remind the whole world and, first and foremost, Israeli society that the Temple is the center and the heart of the Jewish people, and we still yearn for its reconstruction."

Former prime minister Ariel Sharon incurred the anger of the Arab world in October 2000 when he ascended the mount, sparking Palestinian riots.
