The patriarch Jacob slept at the spot of the Holy Temple and dreamed. In his dream, he sees a " ...ladder set upon the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven... " (Gen. 28:12)
In the morning he opens his eyes and cries aloud: "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of G-d, and this is the gate of heaven." In his prophetic dream Jacob saw the earthly Holy Temple set opposite the Throne of Glory. Jacob then erected a stone monument and anointed it with oil, effectively dedicating the site of the future Temple: First, Second and Third.
The Holy Temple is the gateway to heaven for every human being, where he is summoned to approach G-d. Every human being is created in G-d's image: "In the image of G-d He created man" (Gen. 9:7). Therefore the Divine spark of holiness is alive in each of us. The purpose of man's encounter with G-d in the Holy Temple is to reveal each one's own unique essence and special purpose in this world.
